General Picture Frame Information

A picture frame is composed of many parts that need to work together for an attractive look. There are many things to take into consideration such as the width of the moulding, and the width of the mat borders.  Too wide a mat border, and all you will tend to see is mat, and your photo will tend to get "lost" or seem insignificant, on the other hand too narrow of a border with a wide frame, and the frame could overwhelm everything else.  The goal is try and draw the eye to the photo while enhancing the look.

frame parts hinge detail
  1. Picture Frame Moulding - the frame provides the architectural and decorative support
  2. Glazing - glass or acrylic, depending on the size of your picture frame.
  3. Mat - read about what a mat does at the Mat Shop, they are more than a decorative edge.
  4. Airspace for circulation - your photo, or artwork should not come in contact with the glass.
  5. Hinge - mounts the art to the backing board or mat, while allowing it to expand and contract.
  6. Photograph or other artwork.
  7. Backing board -  A board on which the art is attached to, and supports the photo or artwork.
  8. Filler board - a board used in a frame assembly to occupy vacant space or provide extra rigidity.
  9. Paper Baking - used to seal against dust and other contaminants.
  10. Clips - used to hold everything in frame.  Usually some type of points.

  11. Bumpers - used to help keep frames straight, protect walls, and provide for air circulation around frame.

All my picture frames have the following:

Hand cut, sanded and fitted to your specifications.
All joints are glued and *underpinned with invisible *vee nails, for the highest quality in the industry.
Glass in sizes up to 8" X 10".
Acrylic in all other sizes to prevent breakage.
Bumpers, to protect  your walls and to help keep the frames hanging straight.
All necessary hanging hardware.
Backing Board.

* Underpinning is the method in which fasteners are put in the back side of the frame.  They are invisible when viewed from the front or sides.  Not like some manufacturers who use brads in the sides or staples in the back.

* Vee nails are specially shaped joint fasteners that pull and hold the joints tightly together, combined with high strength wood glue, this results in extremely strong joints.  These are not like the staples used by many manufacturers of cheaper frames.
