How to Measure your
Picture Frames and Mats

These diagrams represent an 11" X 14" picture frame, with all its' components. The explanations of each component and dimension is given below.

viewing area side

The blue area is called the glazing which can be glass, acrylic (Plexiglas), or styrene and would measure 11" X 14".

The yellow represents a mat which should overlap the photo (the black area), at least 1/8" to prevent the photo or artwork from "popping" out from behind the mat (I use 1/8",  this example is showing 1/4" overlap).   This mat would be considered an 11" X 14" mat with an 8" X 10" opening.  The overlap can be any dimension if there is something along the edges you want to cover, (such as a white border),  or if you want to concentrate on the center of the picture.

The black is the photo or artwork to be framed, and in this case is 8" X 10".

The red area represents the backing board, which the mat and and photo is attached to, and also measures 11" X 14"

The outside square brown area is the moulding and can be any width, but is still considered an 11" X 14" frame.

The 10 1/2" X 13 1/2" is called the viewing area.  Notice that the glazing, mat and backing board are all cut to 11" X 14".  The outside dimension of the frame could be anything, depending on the width of the framing moulding and has nothing to do with measuring the size of the frame.

Putting this all together, this is considered to be an 11" X 14" frame and mat, with a mat opening of 8" X 10".
